FAQs

What is it?

TMS is a non- invasive and non- medication treatment for depression, OCD, and smoking cessation. It utilizes magnetic pulses over the brain to stimulate neurotransmitters deficient in depression

Is it safe?

TMS was FDA approved in 2008. During TMS, you stay awake and alert (it does not require anesthesia). This treatment is different from Electro- Convulsive Therapy; TMS is performed in- office and does not carry the risk of memory loss.

Is it painful?

TMS is not painful. During sessions you will feel a light tapping sensation over the head

How long does it take?

The recommended course of treatment is 36 sessions, typically performed 4-5 times per week. The sessions are very short (about 18 minutes long)

How much does it cost?

TMS is covered by most insurance companies. We are currently able to accept insurance for TMS from BCBS. We are happy to discuss self- pay options with you, and help you set up a payment plan

Who is it for?

TMS is effective for anyone who has tried medications such as antidepressants that aren't helping, or not helping enough

Antidepressants not working?

At Aspire Psychiatry in Morganton, NC we are proud to offer NeuroStar TMS. NeuroStar uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to target key areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression. It is not ECT (electroconvulsive therapy).

While the exact cause of depression is not known, the leading scientific theory is that it is caused by an imbalance of the brain’s neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers that send signals between brain cells.

What is NeuroStar Advanced Therapy (TMS)? During a NeuroStar treatment session, a magnet similar in strength to that used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is used to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood. These magnetic pulses may have a positive effect on the brain’s neurotransmitter levels, making long-term remission possible.

Treatment with NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is easy:

  • Therapy sessions are conducted in your NeuroStar provider's office

  • You can return to normal activities right away

  • You are awake during treatment

  • There are no negative effects on memory or sleep

  • It’s covered by most health insurance plans

With more than three million treatments delivered, this novel treatment approach to achieving remission is bringing new hope to people every day.
